Simply Organic Products and mint cocoa smoothie

Simply Organics

I was so thrilled to have the company offer to send me some free merchandise! While I am not the best cook I know by any means, it is certainly something that I enjoy. I am always looking to try out new recipes.

What I received in the mail:

Simply Organic chili powder
cinnamon powder
crushed ginger root powder
peppermint flavouring
vanilla non-alcoholic flavouring

I have utilized Simply Organic’s spices in my recipes before. I have to admit, I’m pretty picky when it comes to my seasonings. I feel the best resource for them are to get them from their most natural state. However, that’s not always a viable option. These products are the next best thing. None of the spices go through any irridation!

The cinnamon in particular was sweeter than what you would normally get from your typical grocery store (which I love!) Everything was so, so fresh and I liked the glass bottles that they came in to ensure freshness for a long time.

Also, one of my favourite things about Simply Organic is the fact that 1% of all sales go to support organic farming 🙂

When I had opened the box and noticed the peppermint flavour, I was a little confused as to how to utilize it. So, I decided to look up some recipes (HE-LLO Pinterest). One that caught my eye: peppermint cocoa smoothie.

Yes, please!

Ingredients:

1 banana
handful of ice
1 TB cocoa powder (I use natural unsweetened Hershey’s)
1 packet of stevia
1/4 tsp Simply Organic peppermint flavouring
1/4 tsp Simply Organic vanilla flavouring
3/4 cup unsweetened Almond milk

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in your blender, and blend, blend, blend!
Then enjoy.

Kind of reminds me of Junior Mints!

Mint chocolate is one of my top favourite flavours. I am so, so happy I discovered this smoothie because I am almost certain I will be consuming it daily!

Trying new things

For someone who doesn’t often like to stray from my typical recipes and food choices, I have seemed to be on the adventurous side lately! You will never guess what I tried….

MOOSE MEAT!

This shouldn’t surprise many of those who live in Alberta, it seems to be a very common food choice in these parts. I don’t typically enjoy much red meat, but a friend of ours who also hunts his own meat actually butchered it himself and gave us enough meat to fill an entire freezer. First recipe that Colt and I opted to try were the moose ribs.

It was a pretty standard recipe and just had them cooking in the crock pot with a container of beef stock, basil, thyme, pepper and salt and a little cayenne and BBQ seasoning for roughly 10 hours. I have to say, they were very tender and tasted better than I had anticipated, but I’m still not the biggest fan. But hey – food is food!

For my breakfasts, I usually turn to a smoothie. It’s always the most standard banana, strawberry and orange, or peanut butter and chocolate! But since I’ve felt as though I needed to add some more protein into my diet, I purchased a sample pack of the vega protein smoothie berry mix too give it a try.

I mixed this in with a handful of frozen mixed berries and some vanilla yogurt. While it does taste fairly good, there is still a little bit of a chalky taste that is left over. This was to be expected because the powder is completely vegan and natural. But what I loved the most was the staying power. One package has 15 grams of protein which kept my hunger at bay and keeps me content!

Food aside, I also tried out a new upper body and cardio mix workout! Ohhhh baby I feel it in my muscles already today!

It’s a great heart pumping workout and switches up enough so that you don’t get bored.

Work it out Wednesday

Sooo I’ve began phase 1 of the Jamie Eason program. Instead I’ve put a bit of my own twist on it because I’m already an active person with overall good healthy habits.

I’m going by my own diet program, less so a diet and more so just continuing to make the healthy food choices I do everyday – the foods that I know make me feel good and make my body feel good and fueled.

In terms of the exercise regime, I gotta admit I’ve been a major cardio girl, just like many others! Phase 1 of this program calls for no cardio AT ALL and that’s not okay with me! I need my running and intense sweat sessions that come from great cardio. It keeps me sane, happy and energized. So I decided that I would do her strength training days while adding in the cardio that I’d like each day (which ranges about 4-6 miles daily along with a Long run on weekends).

My goal –> to gain muscle and strength!

So far so good I gotta say! I only am on day 3, but I’m definitely enjoying having everything laid out for me and ready to go in my email. Idiot proof 🙂

My girl friend gave it to me this summer on one of our camping trips and ive seriously put it to good use! I love getting little presents like this that end up being an essential part of my everyday 🙂

Beating treadmill boredom

So I got to sleep in an hour later today, lucky me!

Today’s smoothie..
protein pumpkin peanut butter goodness!

ingredients
1/3 cup pumpkin puree
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 scoop protein powder (I always use harmonized vegan vanilla protein powder)
5 cubes of ice
1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/3 cup water
2 drops of liquid stevia sweetener
and then I always add in some quick oats in the end, I love the consistency it makes!

Combine into a blender and voila, enjoy my friends 🙂

Unfortunately I was on the go go go and could not stop to take a picture, but I’m sure you’re familiar with what this type of smoothie might have looked like! Autumn orange!

Workout

Treadmill HIIT workout for today, since the weather is less than desirable outside!

We all know that treadmill workouts can be daunting to say the least. I found myself dreading the task before heading to the gym this morning, so i order to make it a little more interesting, I devised a solid workout with a lot of speed work to keep my motivation up!

It kept my mind and body entertained and made it go by a lot faster 🙂

Ahhhh I have a few spare minutes this morning so I thought I’d share with you my early morning workout today!

It consisted of:

40 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill. It looked like this routine below:

I loves me a good HIIT workout, it gets your heart pumpin’ so good and you always feel like you worked hard afterward. It’s especially nice for me in the morning because I always feel like I start on the right foot.

I then took it fairly easy. I did some pilates core work consisting of planks and stability ball work. Then I stretched it out.

My smoothie today is a weird concoction. I am in need of upping my veggie intake so I used some of the Progressive vegan vegegreens powder in blueberry medley flavour, then mixed in half a banana, ice, 1/2 cup almond milk, stevia, cinnamon and 1/3 cup oats.

It’s actually fairly good tasting! And nearly 8 servings of vegetables in it! Talk about SUPERFOOD

Sounds interesting to say the least. It was pretty good, but I still prefer my all time favourite PB and banana smoothies in the morning 🙂

I also had a handful of almonds because I was starving after hitting the gym this morning. BAH!

Pumpkin spice smoothie and cardio circuit day!

My day consisted of some of my regular fitness regime, I got up and went to the gym in town around 5:50 and did a circuit, mixing 15 minute cardio, followed by strength focusing on core and upper body, then I repeated this 3 times.

AKA = 15 minute cardio, core, 15 minute cardio, upper body, 15 minute cardio, tadah!
My cardio was the elliptical today.
My knee isn’t fully recovered so I’m not looking to risk it. Better to be safe than sorry!

Anddddd

Since Summer time is slowly coming to an end and fall is quickly approaching that can only mean 1 special thing… PUMPKIN EVERYTHING!!!
Pumpkin is one of my all time favourite flavours, pumpkin pie.. pumpkin lattes… pumpkin scents… cookies… chilli… you name it, I love it in it’s pumpkin version!!!

So in honour of this wonderful season, I decided to whip up a morning smoothie using my can of pumpkin puree in my fridge.

It was a little bit of an on-the-whim smoothie, but man oh man, did it ever turn out D-LICIOUS!!!

This is what I did…

Ingredients:

1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 frozen banana
1 cup of ice cubes
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
generous amount of pumpkin pie spice
2 tablespoons of plain oatmeal to thicken it up a bit
stevia (or any other sweetener) to taste, I used 2 tablespoons

Put all of that into a blender and blend away! Soooooo good. I could eat that every morning. I just might actually….
