Things I’m Loving Friday {19)

Happy first day of Spring!

Words cannot describe how excited I am for this day. I even did my nails with a little Spring inspiration (that’s Robins Egg blue).

However, the weather is not the most favourable. It’s a little bit chilly, and the sun is hiding behind the clouds. That’s okay since this weekend is calling for some girl time hang outs and some home DIY projects that I’m hoping don’t kill me!

And time for another Friday of love:

Pi (3.14) Day

What better excuse to gorge on your favourite PIE?! Mine = Strawberry Rhubarb and I did not resist.

The lazy girl’s makeup hacks

Cosmo posted this on their facebook page and I had to immediately ‘click’. If I can save time in the morning on makeup application I am so for it! All the steps are simplified so even the makeup inept have an easier time understanding the whole art behind it πŸ˜‰

Long drives

driveslookout spring

Colt and I have been together since grade 11 in high school. And long drives have always been one of our ‘things’ we do to just take up some time and enjoy some good conversation with some coffee or tea! We realized this weekend we hadn’t went on one of our excursions in a little while, so decided to pack up and head out for a little adventure around the area.

Food of the week – Big salads

Is there anything better than a big salad? Okay, I know we can all probably think of a few things, but lately my craving for salad has been intense. Maybe it’s the thought of summer coming, or the better looking veggies that have been displayed in my grocery store.Β  My favourite toppers lately have been cheeses (bocconcini), grape tomatoes, olives, radishes, almonds and balsamic dressing.

Purchase of the week – headlamp

How did I wait so long to buy this? It’s helped me so much on my early morning runs. Before this week, I was avoiding a lot of areas of town and opting for the well lit main streets in order to prevent a terrible fall (knock on wood!) But now, I can take all the routes I love and don’t have to worry about doing a lot of guess work in terms of where to step.. If you are an early morning/late night runner, I highly suggest you get one!

Video of the week – yoga essentials video

My love for yoga is no secret. I’m constantly looking for ways to help push my body to accomplish new poses and to get more flexible and strong. This video actually offered some good tips and explanations as to how to ease into some of the more difficult poses. It concentrates on building strength in specified muscle groups. Definitely worth the watch!

Snowshoes in the sunshine

Hello world!

The weather has been absolutely unbelievable as of late. The sun has been shining, and therefore I have been BEAMING with positive vibes. My attitude is always seeming to be right in line with the weather patterns!

Yesterday we got the chance to get out and go snowshoeing in this warmth!

snow

It was pretty cool because although it was 17 degrees celsius and sunny, there was still lots of snow to walk on at the beach. We actually walked right across the frozen waters of Slave Lake! It was so neat and such a fun time.

Then when we got in from an eventful day, we sat down to a nice, warm bowl of chili and a bun πŸ™‚ Ah nothing beats that!

Later on in the day, Colt and I met up with some friends to watch our friend Conor’s final hockey game of the season! Unfortunately, they lost. But it’s a good thing he isn’t a sore loser because we still had tons of fun together for the night!

RUN:

My run this morning was a steady pace 10 km, or 6.2 miles. I thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors for this one, and am going to actually be heading out for another good, relaxing walk with the pups shortly to take advantage of this.

While doing so I’ll be thinking of good eats to make myself πŸ™‚

Things I’m Loving Friday

So many favourites this Friday!

Nutrition month activities

Since March is nutrition month, school has been filled with healthy eating activities! I find it so fun to be able to teach my little ones all about the importance of ‘eating a rainbow’ and the wonderful effects of it has on your body, mind and soul. I gotta say, nutrition is a passion of mine and if I could spend the rest of my days learning and teaching all about it forever and ever, I’d be one happy gal:)

Microwave mug brownie (recipe of the week)

Image result for mug brownie

In a mug I combined:

2 TB unsweetened coco powder
1 TB stevia sweetener
4 TB flour
2 TB butter
1 TB water
Β» Then pop it in the microwave for 45 seconds – 1 minute 30 seconds, depending on how gooey you like them !!

Ever had a craving for a good baked dessert but don’t want to take the time to bake up a storm at 8 pm? Yup, that’s me, quite often. Colt was intensely craving one as well and so we decided to try out one of these ‘mug’ desserts that are becoming ever so popular. Great idea and they turned out delish!

Favourite workout of the week

Start with 20 minute cardio, do this core workout, then finish up with 20 more minutes cardio!

House of Cards season 3 on Netflix

Oh baby I’m so excited for this show to be back on Netflix! Love, love, love this show. And it’s odd because you wouldn’t take me for the political type – but this show is soo much more than that. Lots of juicy drama!

Purchase of the week – new pretty accessories from Forever 21

Ain’t nothin’ better than some cute new accessories. I’m an accessory kind of girl – they can easily spruce up any simple outfit and any fashionably challenged individual (often times, me) can rock it no prob! I am especially loving some of their new lip gloss too!

Early morning runs

dark out dark out 2

Well. this one is something that I’ve obviously been doing for a while now! But, with our mornings warming up here in Canada and having more light out, they have become much more enjoyable! Today’s morning run was actually so enjoyable I ended up going for longer than planned, I barely had enough time to get ready for work! It ended up being 8 miles in the DARK! WIN!

Save your sanity

Hello! Today is basically my working Monday, as I have been in Edmonton all weekend and just arrived home last night. My work team and I were all attending a seminar, called ‘Save your sanity’ – proactive strategies for handling difficult behaviour in children and youth.

(tried to be sneaky with this picture)

save you

I gotta say, it was well done and our facilitator did an awesome job at really keeping me engaged and attentive all day (which is VERY hard as I am so ADHD). Working in schools, these sorts of strategies are soo helpful and a great thing to bring back to the teaching staff because every class tends to have at least one pesky kid that is a little bit more difficult to handle than others!

On sunday, the gals and I got a chance to have a nice little shopping and outting day! Because why not. We went to West Edmonton mall, and I did treat myself to this baby:

mcflurry

SMARTIES MCFLURRY! I haven’t had one of these in ages… I deserved it.

After dropping off our loads of purchases at the car (I bought a little too much!! Fave stops – Forever 21, H&M, Bath and body works, lululemon and Aritzia!), we headed over to Earl’s for dinner.

At this point I was yet again starving and could not wait to dig in…

dinner

I chose the chicken sandwich with a side salad!

And since the weather was divine I could not resist the temptation of a caesar (or bloody Mary for all ya’ll Americans!)

After our delicious feast, we headed over to the movies. I was excited for this since I haven’t been to the movies in AGES. We saw a flick called the DUFF. It was pretty funny actually and had a cute little inspiring message at the end. It’s a good easy watch if you’re looking for something you don’t need to do some crazy analyzing with! AKA GONE GIRL.

I woke up in the morning in the hotel and with lack of resources, I headed downstairs to the hotel gym. Which had very limited equipment. I had to get a little creative and remembered PB fingers HOTEL workout! I did half an hour on the elliptical prior to this.

Bodyweight Workout

Thanks Julie! I’m going to have to put together one of my own as well and share it with you all as I will be travelling quite a bit coming up. I’m sure there’s many of you who will be for holidays as well!

On a positive note – my squats seem to FINALLY be having an impact on my body. Seriously, I have had a flat backside my whole life, I’ve been reallllyyyy upping my squat game lately and I see a good bump coming in.

On the way home I got the chance to sit in the back and watch movies like a child πŸ™‚

headphone

And I had my yummy jugo juice “Can’t Beet this” smoothie, yummmmmmmmmmmmmm! Beets make me happy and I love the health benefits of them.

First *official* blog post! Getting started with your healthy life.

HEALTHY

For me, health and fitness has been incorporated into my life ever since I can remember. My parents from the get-go had my sister and I out and about and thinking about healthy food, whether it was having us kick a soccer ball in the yard as toddlers, to teaching us how to keep our school lunches healthy.

However, this life simply isn’t put onto most people. Most of us have to go through atleast some sort of learning experience and life change to adjust to the reality that we need to take our lives into our own hands if we want to feel our best.

Once I was out of my parents home and in university, I had no one there to monitor my life and keep me on track. I was faced with residence cafeteria foods, binge drinking, a serious lack of sleep, let alone any time put aside to exercise. Needless to say, I gained the typical “freshman 15” and then some! So, I do know what it’s like to reach a point where you realize we must change SOMETHING in our lives and we can only do it for ourselves.

First of all, congratulations on wanting to get started on a healthy life!! Whatever the reason is – to lose weight, manage stress, improve self-esteem, to take control of your life, your family – this is the first and most important step in the entire process. If you do not want or care to make a lifestyle change, it simply will not happen. So, you have the momentum now to get going!

It is important to remember that this will not be some fad diet – not a no carb, no sugar, high protein, fasting experience, or any of those other crazes. This will be a LIFE change for you. This means that it is something that will continue throughout your whole life. I know, I know, this might sound totally koo koo to you right now, the thought of your life being different for the rest of your years, but trust me when I say it will be worth it!!! Imagine the life you want, where it doesn’t hurt to do house chores or go out with friends or to play with your children. Where you feel energized and happier all the time. Your self esteem will improve and thus your relationships improve. Not to mention, your weight will be in check, and you provide yourself with so much potential to improve every aspect of your life!

Now that you’ve decided to start living the healthy life, start off with thinking positive self-suggestions daily. This seriously helpme on my ‘blah’ days or where I am feeling unmotivated and sluggish. Some examples:

I am in control of my destiny and my life.

Only I can direct the pattern of my life – today I am choosing to be as healthy as I can.

I am fully capable of achieving the goals that I have set for myself.

I must take my healthy lifestyle one day at a time, one healthy choice at a time.

Everyday I am better, wise, more confident and more in control.

Health and fitness is truly FUN! Think of the way it makes you feel.

Remember- with persistence of these positive affirmations and suggestions, you will be more successful everyday! Soon, these affirmations will be a thing of the past and words that you don’t need to repeat to yourself at all because the healthy way has become your way of life.

Stay tuned on my blog for plenty of information that has helped me get through my greyest of days. As well as a boat load of information on healthy meals, activities, running, mental wellness, relationships and more! If there is anything specific that you ever have a question about, feel free to e-mail me or comment on my posts. =)
