Weekend highlights

Afternoon to ya’ll!

I hope everyone’s weekends were splendid. Mine just about went by in a flash and before I knew it I was back to work, this morning.

I was hoping so badly to go run outside before starting my day but the wind was crazy. I’m talking howling crazy! So instead I resorted to the gym. I got in 35 minutes of cardio on the elliptical and a good tabata workout with the trusty NTC app:

Going back in time a little bit, this weekend was so very relaxed which I totally enjoyed. The weather was sunny and we took advantage of it completely.

Here are some highlights:

 Sangria outback

(forgive me for my nails, eek!)

Warm weather calls for obbligatory sangria (in my world!) My favourite go-to recipe when I have little on hand is this one:

Mix 4 oz. vodka of choice, 2 cups of white penguin wine (or white of your choice), 2 cups of club soda mix, squeezed lemon and frozen mango fruit mix

As you can see, it’s so generic and that’s the beauty of sangria! You can make it in any way you like 🙂

Playing with the pups in the sun

They love the sun even more than I do!! If they could just bask in the sunlight all day, they would be all over it.

 Hiking outdoors

Is there anything better? Maybe.  But this is one of my most beloved activities! Especially when getting to explore some new spots. Check it out- is that ice breaking up?? YAY

 Couch cuddles

Colt snapped this picture when we all somehow managed to squish on our little couch together. This picture does not justify how hilarious it was, especially since Tanner (who is barely in the picture) is SO, so big and was trying so hard to be a part of it!

BBQ with friends

Ahh, such a classic weekend festivity. Combination of food and good friends cannot be beat!

Things I’m Loving Monday 11

It was a fun-filled weekend with friends! I got a chance to get out and be active with colt and went on an adventurous hike at a nearby mountain called Flat Top. We also got to see a pretty awesome show on Saturday night with a few of our friends called ‘Dueling Piano’!!

piano time piano time 2 piano 3 piano 4

It was a show where you can request ANY song you’d like and they play it off-hand! It was some pretty impressive talent they showed and made for some great evening entertainment.
Sunday was a designated lazy day. The weather was crazy here – it SNOWED!!!!!!!! So we spent majority of the day cooped up inside and watching Halloween movies in preparation for this week (so excited!)

Workout

I’ve been sticking with the Jamie Eason program pretty darn well the last 4 weeks, but today I felt like I wanted to switch it up. It was supposed to be a ‘leg day’ but I opted for a strength/circuit regime from PBFingers !

functional workout

It made for a great sweat session this morning. Try it out!

Things I’m Loving
Tribal leggings

tribal legging

I purchased these things for diiiiirt cheap – 7 bucks!!! From Forever 21. They actually feel so nice and I’ve been wanting a pair of tribal or patterned leggings for a while. I like the fact that they are black and white because they’ll go with many different colours and outfits.
Contests (and winning!)

natureboxxx

Did I tell you guys I won a contest?? I believe I did. But I still can’t get over it 🙂 Soo excited to share with you the goodies I get.
Old episodes of goosebumps

goosebumps

On Sunday Colt and I watched a series of old Goosebumps episodes and were lazy to the max. These shows honestly scared me sooo much as a kid! Now watching them I find them hilariously corny. We definitely got a good laugh out of the ones we watched.
Halloween crafting

mummy mason jar mummy door

Working in a school has many perks – including fun holiday themed crafts! There will be many more to come this week. Last week we made mummy mason jars and decorated our door sppooookkyy! Check it out!
Animal rescues!

jack

Not me this time! My sister. Her new dog is a 10 month old husky and arctic wolf cross!! His name is Jack.

I am a firm believer in adopting pets!

What are you guys loving this week? Let me know 🙂

Updates and weekend motivation

Hey friends!

It’s been another long week at work and I haven’t had the time I would have hoped to keep the blog updated.

work train

Myself and my wellness team were hard at work with one of the elementary schools we work in and had a fun filled SUPERHERO health theme! It was so awesome and fun for the kids.

I also got to go and make real homemade pizzas with the local outreach school students. They were so thrilled and were stuffed to the max afterwards!

pizza making line

This week also called for a hike to a new found lake in our area of Northern Alberta. The lake itself didn’t even have a sign identifying it’s name or anything. So Colt and I pretended it was our own little lake and called it just that – Little Lake. 🙂

little lake

And something else really awesome happened for me this week! I won a contest!!!!!! YAHOO 🙂 🙂

pure excitement naturebox

Take a look at this NatureBox! I won a free 6 month subscription where they mail organic and healthy goodie boxes to my door!!! I can’t wait to receive my first one. 🙂 It’s all thanks to Julie Fagan from PBFingers ! Another reason to follow her amazing blog.

But I’m also here now and ready to chat with you about MOTIVATION.

So here’s the scenario… You’ve worked hard alllll week long. You’ve kept up with your workout regimes and strictly adhered to your diet. It’s fairly easy during the week, especially if you’re working a 9-5 job. But then, Saturday and Sunday roll around and all you’re looking to do is either chill out or make time for friends.

But you know that if you keep up with your fitness and health – whether it’s a walk, bike, anything to get moving – you will burn some calories and feel so much better than slugging around!

I’m sure most of us can relate to this feeling. I know I sure can.

But I’ve come up with some of my own ways to try to keep myself motivated on the weekends and ensure I don’t throw a wrench in all of the hard work I’ve put in during the week! (I know I don’t want to be getting up at 5:30 am for no good reason!)

health

Lay out my gear the night before

If it’s Friday night or Saturday night and I want to get a sweat session on in the morning, I will lay out the things I’ll be needing so it’s RIGHT in front of my face. Can’t ignore that.

Set my alarm using an upbeat tune

If my alarm sets off a tune that gets me pumped up and in a good mood then I am much more likely to get my body moving! And if you still don’t make it to the gym or outside then at least you get some good dance moves in. 😉

Set a date

This is probably the best one for me. If I set a date with my boyfriend, friend, or family members then there is very little chance I will be skipping out. It’s tough to bail on the people you love!

Plan to try something new

Sign up for that class you’ve been thinking about at your gym! Or if you’re into running, try going to the lane swim. Or take a look at what your community has to offer! There’s so many cool ways to get in shape these days – barre, zumba, yoga, rock climbing, the possibilities are endless!

Think about the goals you have for yourself

Remind yourself of the person you want to be and the level of fitness you want to achieve. Not to mention the positive endorphins you’ll be feeling afterwards.

Things I’m Loving Monday 10

It’s been a busy and hectic Monday for me! Work this morning was filled with multiple meetings, followed by an afternoon of several wellness groups within the local catholic high school where I live. So let’s just get right to it, shall we? Things I’m loving this week…..

JENGAAAA

jenga

Oh how I love classic board games! We got this one out from our box of old things and spent an afternoon this week just playing and and enjoying each other’s company and chatting away! So simple, yet so entertaining.

Halloween crafting

halloween craft

Take a look at these bad boys! I brought this craft into a classroom at one of the highschool’s special ed classes and completed them with some of the girls. They loved it and so did I! So fun. To be honest, I’m a sucker for anything themey! I’m loving also putting up the decorations and look forward to some serious pumpkin carving next week..

Log homes

dream log home

It’s pretty much a dream of mine to own a log cabin or home when I’m older. I love the rustic feel of it and to go home to a cottage feeling house would be sooo nice. They are so warm and comfy feeling when you walk into them! I spotted this one along the lake nearby and fell in love with it.

We spotted this beautiful home when in search of a good place to go on a little Autumn hike. The local lake was so calm and gorgeous!

fall hike

McDonald’s coffee

mccafe coffee

I forgot how much I loved their coffee!! It’s the best little morning pick-me-up. Not to mention they have monopoly right now (however I haven’t won anything yet, what’s new…)

Steak dinner

steak dinner

I don’t typically eat steak that often, but tonight my boyfriend made me a delicious candlelit steak dinner! The side of asparagus made the plate absolutely amazing.
In terms of workouts as of late – I have kept up with my daily cardio averaging between 6.5 km – 10 km. Today’s Jamie Eason workout was shoulders and abs and it felt gooooooood.

Happy Monday ya’ll! 🙂

My Edmonton Trip

Hi everyone! It’s been a few days and I love to tell you all about my weekend in Edmonton Alberta!

I made the drive on Saturday morning, it’s only 2 hours away so not bad at all! Driving gives me some good thinking time as well:) I arrived at a good time and hit up west Edmonton mall in good time!

IMG_4009.JPG
I gt some good shopping in at my favourite places – Lululemon, sephora, pink, Aritzia, bath and body works and various health Marts. Oh and any forget forever 21 and h&m, which are always total zoos!
I could not believe the amount of Christmas decor throughout the mall !!

I picked up some lunch from Opa! Greek cuisine.

IMG_4014.JPG
An could not forget about getting my favourite pumpkin spice latte! My weakness.

The day was fooled by a drive over to my sisters house to spend the evening. We went on a walk in the neighbourhood and enjoyed the sunshine!

There was also a nearby doggy park, great for tanner!

At this point I could not find my phone and was unable to capture our thanksgiving evening!!! I know HOW UNLUCKY! But I’m certain you have all seen what the typical dinner looks like – delicious turkey, potatoes, vegetables and cranberry sauce followed by homemade pumpkin pie! Yum yum yum !

The next day I picked up my boyfriend from the airport! He’s finally made the move here and I no longer have to be living in my house alone 🙂

We went for a hike up to what’s called bear hill and enjoyed the lookout. We also wet and checked out slave lake. Colt (my boyfriend) had never been here before and absolutely loves it!

The day was followed by an amazing dinner that he prepared. Salmon, asparagus, mushrooms and potato twice baked! He has definitely upped his cooking game and I am thoroughly impressed 🙂

Overall an amazing weekend!

Things I’m Loving 8

Things I’m loving 8

Sorry to have seemed like I disappeared lately! It’s been a busy Canadian thanksgiving weekend as I’m sure many of you can understand. It’s definitely one of my favourite holidays!! (Really any holiday with good food in mass amounts…)

So I’ll be later updating you on my weekends festivities. Right now we can get right to the things I’m loving as of late!

Fall hikes

IMG_4025.JPG

IMG_4030.JPG
This weekend honestly couldn’t have been better fall weather! And perfect for a hike. These pictures show colt and i going to the top of marten mountain overlooking slave lake in northern Alberta! Gorgeous view.

Mediterranean slouvaki plate

I know I know, not quite thanksgiving food, but I ate this on Saturday and wowza it was delicious!

West Edmonton mall

IMG_4010.JPG

IMG_4009.JPG
Nt only does this mall have everything you could ever need and think of, but there’s also copious amounts f
entertainment through out the day! Just going through I witnessed a pirate play and cute seal show! But seriously- everything you can think of is in this mall- a theme park and roller coasters, laser tag, bowling, a casino, water park, a Canadian made New Orleans bourbon street with numerous restaurants, an aquatic center, pirate ship, marine land, rock climbing, every single store and food joint you can think of! It’s a must see if you ever get the chance.

The fact that colt has arrived!

IMG_4026.JPG
Yes!! My boyfriend of 7 years has finally made the move in with me!! I couldn’t be happier 🙂

My new books

IMG_4012.JPG
I started reading the Rosie project this weekend. It’s gotten race reviews and has been recommended to me many times so I figured ’twas time to pick it up! So far it’s excellent and a very easy read. The perspective of the main character makes it soo interesting as I work with many kids with asburghers! My reason for the Lena Dunham book is because I simply think she is a brilliant and hilarious girl. Her show ‘girls’ is soo good and she has a hilarious take on life! The book sounds like it’s going to be really entertaining so i look forward to that one!

The maple leafs

IMG_4016.JPG
They haven’t started this season off
well (what’s new) but they will always have my heart in the land of hockey:) go leafs go!!

Things I’m loving Sunday/Monday

It’s been a long week and weekend! We pretty much got the last of our Canadian summer weather this weekend. It’s already claiming to go down to 6 degrees this week… 😦 I can’t believe it came and went so fast! Ah well, all a part of living in this beautiful country.

My running has stayed at the same level. I’ve stuck with short runs (20 minutes) mixed in with cross-training, mainly cardiovascular work on the elliptical machine which still gets my HR up as well as a lot more pilates and core building work which will benefit me big time when I get back into my regular running routine! I’m used to running outside, which passes the time much quicker in comparison to doing cardio in the gym….
I feel like I’m constantly watching the clock. tick tock tick tock.
However, there are ways I’ve made the time go by a littleeee bit faster, utilizing some great HIIT elliptical workouts. I’ll share with you my favourite one this week:

elliptical-interval-workout

I got this one from the blog pbfingers.com – I always check her blog out, it’s really entertaining and has a lot of good recipes and workouts!! And this workout certainly kicked my butt!!! You can also adjust the resistance according to your fitness levels so that it works best for you. But I actually felt great after this one.

Now I’ll get to my things I’m loving Monday (or late Sunday for some) segment!!! Here we go…

  • Hiking Days

hikingday2hikingday3 hikingday4hikingday1

I made the most of this warm weather this weekend because I knew it would probably be the last time it would reach 24 degrees and sunny here for a while. So Tanner and I headed out to the trans Canada trail and went for a nice long hike. You can tell the leaves are already beginning to change colour (AHHHH!) However, I’ll say it does look beautiful.

  • Cheshire cat mug

cheshire cat1cheshire cat2

My good girlfriend gave this to me, it’s probably one of my new favourite mugs. A huge reason being because I am a Disney fanatic! Anything Disney I usually fall instantly invlove with. This mug is amazing because when it’s hot, the cheshire cat DISAPPEARS and you see only his smile!!! And when cool, he reappears! How amazing is that?!

  • Let’s Be Cops

let's be cops

I saw this movie on Saturday night with some friends. If you’ve ever watched the show ‘New Girl’, the main characters in this movie are actually also 2 of the main male roles in that show. I didn’t really know what to expect going into this movie, and the ratings weren’t all that great. But man oh man, I laughed sooo hard from beginning to end! Seriously hilarious. I recommend everyone go see it (but not so much for little ones)

  • Crockpot Texan chili recipe

texas chili

I had lean ground turkey in the freezer and really wanted to utilize my slow cooker in some way. And I loves me some chili!! It’s also a yummy choice, especially when it’s healthy (like this recipe).
I love crockpot recipes because they are the easiest things ever, literally just dump everything into it and let it sit for 6-8 hours.

Yields:  8|
Ingredients
• 2 pounds lean ground turkey, cubed
• 1 tablespoon canola oil
• 1 onion, minced
• 1-2 jalapeño peppers, minced
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tablespoon ground cumin
• 3 tablespoons Ancho chili powder
• 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, more or less to taste
• 1 can chili seasoned tomatoes
• 1 can mixed beans
• 1 can corn kernels
• Chopped green onions and fat-free Greek yogurt for topping

Directions
Put everything into a slow cooker. Make sure the ground turkey is covered by the mixture and leave in the slow-cooker for 6-8 hours!

Let me know how you enjoyed your weekend!
