World Health Day

In honour of World Health Day, I wanted to talk about our favourite ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle!

This morning I managed to do MY favourite thing to take care of myself: RUN

Another glorious day outside!

Then what did I choose to do next?…..

EAT. I made a healthy breakfast of a veggie omelette with whole wheat toast on the side. It was interesting because I typically crave sweet for breakfast (like my pb and banana or coco oatmeal or pancakes..) but today it was savoury! It was not a let down either.

Don’t forget the ketchup

(need & want this shirt so, so bad)

On my schedule for the rest of the day – grocery shopping, yoga and catching up with a girlfriend who just came back from Costa Rica!

Question for you:
What are you doing for your health and wellness for World Health Day today?

Wild Weather Wednesday

This mornings weather was not the epitome of ideal running conditions… Snow showers. What a terrible combination! I almost thought the forecast yesterday was just going to be one big April Fools joke. Just call it wild weather Wednesday.

snowwww snoww

So instead what did I do?

Why to the gym ofcourse!

Where I decided to take on the elliptical and took advantage of the time to read a few pages of my newest book!

For those of you who like to read, the first novel of this series is called the Rosie project. It was a very easy and adorable read (think great plane book!) and so far, the Rosie effect has not let me down, I’m totally into it!

work

I continued on the elliptical for about 30 minutes where I then moved onto some strength work.

Today was a concentration on upper body and core. Although I finished up with a minute squat challenge because why not 🙂

I got home and was more then ready for some breakfast. Another mish mash meal for me!

And then my day at work basically consisted of a TON of meetings. Man oh man I hate sitting all day long! Time to go for a walk with the pups, I’m out!

Life recap

It’s been a while since I’ve been in touch, 6 whole days, what is this!? Well, forgive me. Life has caughten up to me this week and weekend at work and with family commitments. Nutrition month has consisted of exuberant amounts of planning, travelling and facilitating of presentations. PLUS I’ll actually be presenting on mental health and wellness to faculty at a college next week, too! It’s exciting and nerve-wrecking all at once. But again, a lot of my time has been put into that one!

Energy bites at school were DE-licious. We had to make these babies with soy butter instead, being in a school and all, but they were actually still a lot better than I thought they would be! The kiddies gobbled every last one up no problem.

RECIPE:

1 cup natural peanut butter
1/4 cup organic honey
1/4 cup coconut
3 Tablespoons of chia seeds
1/3 cup dark chocolate chips
1 cup oats (of choice)
1 Tablespoon cinnamon

– It’s as easy as stirring them all up in  a bowl, squishing some together to form balls, then placing them on parchment paper and into the fridge to chill for 2-4 hours (or as long as you’d like).

RUN:
I did manage to keep on running schedule these past few days. No matter how busy I tend to get in my days I ALWAYS need to make time for my fitness. This is pretty much what keeps me sane. I’m sure that many of you health nuts know what I’m talking about – you just feel off all day without that movement break.

It felt great to enjoy the day outside yesterday. I haven’t ran in the rain in a while, and was a little nervous before getting outside. In the end, it felt so refreshing! Even a little liberating, like I was a superhero!

I also would like to share my favourite workout of the week – Lower body blast

gymmin

My legs were in pain afterwards!! (The best pain, ofcourse)

Enjoy your mornings xo

Typical Tuesday

Running updates for you:

Yesterday, I wanted so badly to get up before work and head out the door for a run, but the roads were covered in snow. I was so sad when I looked out the window and instead had to defer my running to the treadmill. Treadmills just are not the same!

I still managed to get in a good 5 miles (which is just right according to my intermediate half marathon training schedule), so not all was lost!

EATS:

I arrived back home just in time to pack myself a quick breakfast to take on the go.

photo 3

There’s some mushy looking grapefruit, plain Greek yogurt, some almond granola and a dash of cinnamon 🙂

And a spoon full of this good stuff, can’t get enough!

photo 4

Crunchy peanut butter was 65% off at the grocery store!!! How can anyone say no to that deal?

Peanut butter is pure happiness in a jar.

On another note, I saw this cool activity posted on Costa Rica’s Peace Retreat’s Instagram account. I am putting this on my bucket list. I am planning on doing that this summer!

What’s one thing you REALLY want to do this summer?

Have a good day everyone !!!

Simply Organic Products and mint cocoa smoothie

Disclaimer: This post is 100% my opinion and view on the products alone. While I did receive free merchandise on behalf of the company, I am not receiving compensation for having affiliate links posted on my blog.

Simply Organics

I was so thrilled to have the company offer to send me some free merchandise! While I am not the best cook I know by any means, it is certainly something that I enjoy. I am always looking to try out new recipes.

What I received in the mail:

Simply Organic chili powder
cinnamon powder
crushed ginger root powder
peppermint flavouring
vanilla non-alcoholic flavouring

I have utilized Simply Organic’s spices in my recipes before. I have to admit, I’m pretty picky when it comes to my seasonings. I feel the best resource for them are to get them from their most natural state. However, that’s not always a viable option. These products are the next best thing. None of the spices go through any irridation!

The cinnamon in particular was sweeter than what you would normally get from your typical grocery store (which I love!) Everything was so, so fresh and I liked the glass bottles that they came in to ensure freshness for a long time.

Also, one of my favourite things about Simply Organic is the fact that 1% of all sales go to support organic farming 🙂

If you go to their website here, you can purchase any products, as well as look up some great recipes that suit any of your cravings!

When I had opened the box and noticed the peppermint flavour, I was a little confused as to how to utilize it. So, I decided to look up some recipes (HE-LLO Pinterest). One that caught my eye: peppermint cocoa smoothie.

Yes, please!

Ingredients:

1 banana
handful of ice
1 TB cocoa powder (I use natural unsweetened Hershey’s)
1 packet of stevia
1/4 tsp Simply Organic peppermint flavouring
1/4 tsp Simply Organic vanilla flavouring
3/4 cup unsweetened Almond milk

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in your blender, and blend, blend, blend!
Then enjoy.

Kind of reminds me of Junior Mints!

Mint chocolate is one of my top favourite flavours. I am so, so happy I discovered this smoothie because I am almost certain I will be consuming it daily!

Things I’m Loving Friday {17}

Another week, another things I’m loving segment! I always look so forward to these posts!

My new BBQ

Okay, I could not write this segment without including this.. We got it used… but it’s new to us and works well so it’s great! We have literally used this to cook up dinner EVERY night this week and I am basically on cloud nine because Colt has really been taking the reigns on our meals! Advice ladies – if you are sick of cooking, get a BBQ!

French toast recipe

UM who doesn’t love french toast?? This is the bomb! It’s absolutely an indulgence, but after doing a 15 km run, this is definitely what my body needs!

Ingredients:

Bread of choice sliced
2 egg whites
dash of milk
tsp vanilla
cinnamon
nutmeg
cooking oil

Directions:

Dip one slice of bread at a time into the mixture of your eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, until coated very well. Spray a piping hot pan with your cooking oil and place the slice of bread on it, leaving it there for a couple minutes until browned and then flip to the other side. TOPPINGS – you can go with the typical syrup, but I usually actually opt for fruit or even a little peanut butter 😀 Or… everything you can think of because why not?

Clinique dramatically different moisturizer

My skin has been going through a dry spell lately and this moisturizer has been my saving grace. I highly, highly recommend it to those suffering very dry skin.

Snack of the week – Popcorn with kernel’s buffalo wing seasoning

I looove, love, love popcorn. You don’t even understand. I’ve tried every seasoning under the sun but was introduced to this one actually just this week! It’s kind of garlicy with a kick. I find myself going back for more and more!

The most simple of things – SUNSHINE

Now, I know most people love sunshine. But I feel like living in Alberta, Canada, the winter time leaves me very deprived of it and seriously lacking some vitamin D. Lately, the sun has been shining and the weather has been absolutely gorgeous. Overlooking the weather forecast for the next week looks like it’s going to continue warming up and I could not be happier! I can’t wait to spend as much time as I can basking in the rays and breathing in that sweet spring air!

Eats n treats

I’m layin’ out for you a typical meal plan in the life of Jamie! I don’t count calories ever, I just try my best to eat foods that make me feel good and that I know are healthy.

7:00 AM – wake up, breakfast time! GRAPEFRUIT as per usual. With a side of some random mushy yogurt goodness with some flax and almond granola and strawberries.

12:00 PM – LUNCH TIME for me. Finally caught a break from work. Looks like a left over burger from last night and a salad! These burgers were homemade, the juiciest most delicious burgs of life. Oh and a piece of kinders chocolate that was staring me down …

Image result for mini kinder surprise egg in hand

3:30 PM – Always starving as soon as I get in the door from home. I tend to open the cupboard and fridge and scavenge for whatever good snacky thing I can find. It usually ends up being the same things… Crackers, apple, nuts… Today I opted for some cut up carrots, brocollli and some of this yummy sour scream Salsa Fiesta dip (Jamie APPROVED!)

6:30 PM – dinnaaaa time. My favourite time. Tonight = BBQ Chicken (we sure have been utilizing it as much as possible) with some rice and steamed asparagus on the side.

Night time snack – popcorn with some kernels seasonings. I have this almost every night and I kid you not. Tonights seasoning was KETCHUP!

Trying new things

For someone who doesn’t often like to stray from my typical recipes and food choices, I have seemed to be on the adventurous side lately! You will never guess what I tried….

MOOSE MEAT!

This shouldn’t surprise many of those who live in Alberta, it seems to be a very common food choice in these parts. I don’t typically enjoy much red meat, but a friend of ours who also hunts his own meat actually butchered it himself and gave us enough meat to fill an entire freezer. First recipe that Colt and I opted to try were the moose ribs.

It was a pretty standard recipe and just had them cooking in the crock pot with a container of beef stock, basil, thyme, pepper and salt and a little cayenne and BBQ seasoning for roughly 10 hours. I have to say, they were very tender and tasted better than I had anticipated, but I’m still not the biggest fan. But hey – food is food!

For my breakfasts, I usually turn to a smoothie. It’s always the most standard banana, strawberry and orange, or peanut butter and chocolate! But since I’ve felt as though I needed to add some more protein into my diet, I purchased a sample pack of the vega protein smoothie berry mix too give it a try.

I mixed this in with a handful of frozen mixed berries and some vanilla yogurt. While it does taste fairly good, there is still a little bit of a chalky taste that is left over. This was to be expected because the powder is completely vegan and natural. But what I loved the most was the staying power. One package has 15 grams of protein which kept my hunger at bay and keeps me content!

Food aside, I also tried out a new upper body and cardio mix workout! Ohhhh baby I feel it in my muscles already today!

This is my workout from this morning:

It’s a great heart pumping workout and switches up enough so that you don’t get bored.

Protein pancakes & Work it out Wednesday!

I don’t normally have pancakes in the morning.. but when I do, I make sure that they are the most epic and delicious pancakes EVER. Which brings me to my recipe today…

I got this recipe from an old friend from highschool and uni!! Thanks Parisa!

 Protein Pancakes
Ingredients (for 3 pancakes):

proteinnnn

½ cup of rolled oats
1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder
½ a banana
1 tsp coconut flour  (optional, but adds fluffiness)
1tsp of stevia (or sweetener of choice- keep it natural)
3 egg whites
1 tsp hemp seeds (optional)
1 tsp chia seeds (optional)
cinnamon (optional)
almond butter
fruit and walnuts for garnish (optional)
coconut oil
Directions:
Combine the protein powder, oats, coconut flour, seeds, stevia and cinnamon
Mush half the banana and mix with the egg whites
Mix the wet mix with the dry mix until you have a desired pancake consistency- you may need to add a little bit of water if the mix isn’t smooth enough

fryin' them up!
fryin’ them up!

Heat the skillet, and cook the pancakes in coconut oil for about 2 minutes on each side (until golden brown)
Next is the fun part – add your favourite toppings to garnish the pancakes
I used almond butter to replace syrup, the other half of my banana, some blueberries and walnuts. I also sprinkled some cinnamon and try to add it to as many recipes I can because it’s a natural fat burner and makes any dish smell and taste delicious! These pancakes are the perfect breakfast to have after a workout, or even before because they will give you a ton of energy. I have tried a few powders, and so far I like Power Whey the best. You can buy it at any supplement store such as Popeye’s or GNC for approximately $40 for 908 grams which will last you a long time, especially if you use it only for baking and cooking. If you are sensitive to whey protein powder, there are other options (vegan powders) that you can use instead.  These pancakes are PACKED with nutrients, leave you full and I promise your taste buds will thank you, so give these bad boys a try! 🙂

Yes I ate them all :)

WORKOUT

This morning I worked out before heading to school for work.
Here was my routine:

work it out wedneday

It was a good and sweaty session! On top of this, I also did 35 minutes on the elliptical. After work today I also upped my cardio by going on a nice speed walk with my doggy Tanner! Gotta enjoy this nice weather while it’s here! 🙂

How did you spend your ‘work it out’ wednesday??

Breakfast obsession

Saturday morning has arrived!

My morning routine thus far has consisted of a walk with tanner.

IMG_3903.JPG

He was happy by the end of it, I’m sure you can tell 😊

Then came my favourite meal.. Breakfast time!! I’ve come to realize the reality of my obsession with breakfast… I know a lot of people have it as their favourite meal but I honestly think I could live off breakfast everyday every meal! It may have to do with the high carb contents of my breakfasts, but healthy complex carbs ofcourse! That’s what powers me through my days.

The combination of peanut butter and pumpkin might sound a little strange but I thought I would give it a try this morning, and I’m so glad I did!

I put 1/3 cup pumpkin purée, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, a little
Almond milk, stevia into a blender and blend until smooth.
Then in a bowl I combined 1/3 cup of quick oats with 1/3 cup of wheat puffs.
I poured the blend over the oats and puffs and topped with some nuts and voila!

Carbs carbs carbs I need carbs in the morning.

IMG_3923.JPG
They make me happy and taste delicious 😍

This will give me the energy I need for my workout later on ( I’ll keep you updated on that!)

On a side note, I also tried making pumpkin spice and cinnamon roasted chickpeas yesterday! I recommend it, it’s very simple!

IMG_3924.JPG
Just pop these suckers on a baking sheet in an oven at 375 for 30 minutes after sprinkling them with cinnamon and pumpkin spice 🙂

Have you noticed I’ve been pumpkin cray cray lately?
Can you blame me though?

Happy eatin’!
